Seeking a job

The most common method of job seeking is to read through advertisements in portals, such as cinfoPoste, and then apply. But sometimes you cannot find a suitable vacancy. What then?

First think through your situation: what type of position are you looking for? What are you qualified for? Find out which employers you feel are worth considering, whether they have vacancies and where they advertise. And who is your competition?

Consider internships

Not all organisations advertise their internships. It can therefore be important to take the initiative and consider sending unsolicited applications. However, it is very important that you first research thoroughly, target your applications based on your research and have clear goals in mind about what you want to learn during the internship.

Unsolicited applications in humanitarian aid

Some organisations working in humanitarian aid, such as Médecins Sans Frontières MSF or the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC, recruit continuously and advertise vacancies in jobs portals only when they have particular difficulties in filling certain positions. Unsolicited applications are therefore the rule. Some organisations in personnel development cooperation (PDC) also function in the same way.

Multilateral institutions, international competition

Large multilateral organisations, such as United Nations organisations and development banks (International Financial Institutions), advertise vacancies on their own platforms. Because they recruit internationally, the competition is generally much higher. It can be difficult for the inexperienced to assess special requirements and therefore their chances.

The Swiss government supports Swiss professionals interested in a career in multilateral institutions and finances individual positions, including junior professional positions.

Stay connected and active

Job hunting means being informed. Learn about organisations and their current developments. Maintain contacts and let people know where you stand. The more active you are, the sooner you will find out about opportunities that you might otherwise not have considered or that are rarely advertised, such as maternity leave positions.
