Security and Stress Management for NGOs


  • Assess the major security risks prevailing in the country of assignment
  • Take adequate measures to prevent incidents or limit their consequences
  • Apply simple, personal stress management tools related to safety
  • Identify situations when emotional first aid should be applied and practise it
  • Understand the legal obligations of the Swiss Abroad Act for individuals and organisations

Course Content

Day 1

  • Introduction to the Crisis Management Centre (KMZ) of the FDFA
  • Procedures at KMZ in case of a kidnapping
  • Risk assessment
  • Task force, first steps in a crisis
  • Information security (including data protection and IT security)

Day 2 and 3

  • Personal behaviour in daily life: where to stay, how to move around, accidents, dealing with officials
  • Communication and negotiation: dealing with criminals, violent individuals and crowds, de-escalation, assertiveness
  • Behaviour if taken hostage or in the case of carjacking
  • Stress management: on-going stress abroad, stress related to security incidents, receiving a victim who has suffered acute stress


Professionals, and their partners or spouses, preparing for an assignment in humanitarian action or development work abroad; country managers and programme coordinators at Headquarters preparing for short field visits; managers responsible for staff safety and security


Theoretical inputs; group work, including exchanging experiences and good practices among participants and role-plays; individual reflection
