Revisit the event «Working with the United Nations»
The event aimed at increasing the awareness on the working reality, application processes and recruitment trends in these five priority UN organisations of the SDCSwiss Agency for Development and Cooperation . An expert panel discussion, a series of workshops, individual consultations with UNVUN Volunteers and various networking opportunities made this a successful day.
Landing a career with the UN
The event kicked off with a panel discussion, where specialists from UNDPUnited Nations Development Programme , UNFPAUnited Nations Population Fund , UNICEFUnited Nations Children's Fund , UNV, and UN WomenUnited Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women , mostly HR professionals, shared information and discussed specific questions on working with their organisations, recruitment trends and do’s and don’ts when applying. Participants were especially interested in learning about application processes, transferrable skills, roster recruitments, the added value of doing consultancies and the benefits of going on mission as UNV Specialists.
The discussion was deepened in subsequent workshops, where participants had the chance to ask questions related to their profiles. They were provided with information on recruitment specificities of each organisation and useful tips to increase their eligibility and suitability.
«Getting in touch with UN staff directly involved in recruitment was my most valuable take-away»
A UNV Specialist assignment as ideal entry point
At the in-person event, special light was shed on the possibility for qualified candidates to apply as UN Volunteer Specialist and the importance this could have for exposure to and knowledge of the UN System for a future career.
«Many current UN staff started off as UNVs, thus, a UNV assignment is considered an excellent entry point for qualified professionals without previous UN experience»
About 20 qualified and pre-vetted participants attended short individual consultations with two UNV Recruitment Specialists during the afternoon session. These individual exchanges were extremely useful for participants who appreciated the chance to receive personal feedback on their profile.
Your application – your selling point
The application preparation workshop in the afternoon was conducted by cinfo counsellors in collaboration with HR representatives of UNDP and UN Women. The workshop was built around four steps that can be seen as characteristic for writing effective resumes, Personal History Profiles (PHPs), and cover letters for multilateral organisations: 1) Knowing yourself, 2) Understanding the position, 3) Building the PHP/Resume and 4) Writing the Cover letter. A mix of theoretical input, tips and feedback from UN representatives and various group exercises made the workshop a valuable experience to prepare upcoming UN applications.
«The workshop contained some useful exercises and was very helpful and well organised. Thank you!»
