Established in 1863, the ICRC operates worldwide, helping people affected by conflict and armed violence and promoting the laws that protect victims of war.

The ICRC is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law.

How we work

The seven Fundamental Principles provide an ethical, operational and institutional framework for the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement around the world. They are at the core of the Movement's approach to helping people in need during armed conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies. Seven principles include humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

The ICRC endeavors to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. The raison d’être of the ICRC is to ensure respect, through its neutral and independent humanitarian work, for the lives, dignity and physical and mental well-being of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence.
